5 Top Tips for Starting a New Job

It’s perfectly normal to feel a little nervous starting a new job because it’s hard to know what exactly to expect. Will you pick the job up easily? Will you like your new colleagues? Will your new colleagues like you? ‘Fear of the unknown’ they call it. Here’s some top tips that can help alleviate these worries and help you settle into the new workplace.

1 Do your research

Firstly, make sure you know exactly where the office is and plan your journey – make sure to allow extra time to find the office on the first day in case you have difficulties! Secondly, researching the company on their website or in the news can give you a stronger and more up-to-date indication of the company culture. Knowing any recent company updates will help demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job. Lastly, it may also be helpful to have another look over your specific job role description.

2 Bring the essentials

Make sure to ask if there is anything you need to bring with you. Although they may provide everything you need, it’s always a good idea to bring a pen and paper at the very least. Write everything down (extra tip!), especially passwords and names! This will keep you organised and give you reassurance that if you forget anything you just have to grab the notebook.

3 Wear a smile

Wearing the correct clothing is essential in making a good impression, but equally as important is maintaining a positive attitude. Although you may be nervous, you have a new job – so be happy about it! Build rapport with your boss and new colleagues by introducing yourself and having a short chat. Ask them questions such as “How long have you worked here for?” or “What does your job role entail?”. Besides the job, we are all humans, so let’s get along!

4 Get stuck in

Stay open-minded. You want to impress in the job role but also as a person. Offer to make teas and coffees for the team, go for lunch with colleagues, say yes to staff activities outside of work hours. You want to be part of the company culture. You’re going to be spending a lot of time with these people and having fun brings the workplace closer together!

5 Remember that everybody makes mistakes

Never making any mistakes at work would be like being a flying unicorn… magical but never going to happen. As humans it’s natural to come across obstacles and make mistakes when learning something new or being in a new environment. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t know something, and if you do make an error then be honest, ask how you can fix the problem and learn from it! Nobody is expecting you to be a magical flying unicorn, even your new boss.
