New Year, New Career?
Happy New Year from the team at KX Recruit!
Some may describe the month of January as ‘the Monday of the year’ – pretty boring, dreary and, not to mention, it takes forever to reach that January paycheck after an expensive Christmas! But Monday’s aren’t all bad. Mondays are a fresh start to the week. Mondays are a time where people are motivated to make change. Mondays are a chance to start a new routine. Have you ever wanted to join a gym and thought “I’ll start on Monday“? It just feels right to start something at the beginning. It’s the same with January.
In particular, January 2022 might give people even more motivation for change. Is there a better time for new beginnings after the couple of years we’ve just encountered? The pandemic has given people time for self-reflection and time to realise what they want from life going forward. Many are craving a fresh start and a slightly less unpredictable year. One big change people can make to make it a different and happier year is a career change. Change is good – embrace it!
For many companies, new hiring budgets and business plans come into force in January so all roles which were put on the backburner in November and December are finally getting recruited for – prime time for the recruitment industry!
Why may it be the right time for a career change? There are many signs that your current role is not right for you:
No progression
Boredom is one of the biggest factors in unhappiness. When someone has been in a job for a while and feels they aren’t receiving recognition, praise or promotions for their hard work, it can leave them feeling massively demotivated and stuck.
Low rate of pay
Money isn’t everything, but it is important. Salary comes hand in hand with a person’s progress in the company – whilst employers should be regularly tracking employees progress in the company and skill improvements, they should also be matching this to what they are paying. If a person feels that their pay doesn’t accurately reflect the amount of work they are putting into the job, this can, again, be a huge demotivating factor.
Culture change
We spend a 1/3 of our lives at work, we usually see the people we work with more than our own families/friends on a weekly basis. Although it’s very unlikely employees will always get on like a house on fire, it’s important to recognise when it is to the extent of affecting your happiness. It isn’t uncommon for staff turnover to increase when everybody’s favourite manager retires, for example.
Many have always had a dream job, or at least an ideal career in mind. The new year is the perfect time for you to reach for the stars and make changes that will help you achieve your goals. You may not get the dream job straight away, but the first step could be something as simple as handing your notice in at your current job. Additionally, it may be a good idea to get a temporary or part-time position whilst you are working towards that end goal. Ask yourself that all important question: “what do I really want to be doing in 5 year’s time?” And be realistic about what you may need to do in order to get there.
