Embracing Faith and Inclusivity: A Ramadan Reflection at KX Recruit – Written by Ibrahim Yusuf

Hi! I’m Ibrahim Yusuf. I’m currently completing a T-Level as a Business Support Assistant at KX Recruit. As we approach the end of Ramadan 2025, I would like to share my experience at KX Recruit while observing this month.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a time when Muslims around the world fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs. It’s a time for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and empathy toward those less fortunate. The fast is not just a physical challenge, but also an opportunity to strengthen faith.

Ramadan may sound like a huge struggle to many people but it’s not as hard as it sounds. Instead of feeling the need to eat or drink, many people like me feel motivated to work harder and do more. While some may think it is harder to work during Ramadan, the experience I personally feel is quite the opposite. Whilst fasting, I don’t feel dependant on food and water. Instead focusing on physical needs there’s a deeper sense of spiritual purpose that comes from the commitment of fasting. Moreover, when employers show understanding and consideration during Ramadan, it can have a positive impact on employee morale, loyalty, and job satisfaction. Workers who feel supported are more likely to remain motivated and engaged, which can ultimately benefit the organisation. In this way, employer flexibility during Ramadan is a win-win for both employees and the company.

What can employers do?

For employers who may not be as flexible as they can be during the month of Ramadan, there are valuable lessons to be learned. By recognising the significance of Ramadan for Muslim employees, businesses can improve their workplace culture by demonstrating greater empathy, respect, and inclusivity. For instance, companies can introduce more flexible work hours to accommodate prayer times, provide prayer spaces or allow employees to adjust their start and end times to better align with fasting hours.

My experience of working during Ramadan:

Being part of the KX Recruit team this Ramadan, I am learning how to balance my academic commitments with the demands of work, all while practicing my faith.

I’m grateful for how the KX Recruit team have shown understanding and respect for my fasting, offering flexible breaks for prayer times and accommodating my need to adjust my schedule.

During this Ramadan, I’ve found myself reflecting on how the KXR work environment values inclusivity and respect for different cultural and religious practices. As a young person navigating a new environment, it isn’t always easy to feel comfortable or express myself fully. It can be daunting to share personal beliefs and traditions, especially when those around you may not be familiar with them. However, being part of the team at KX Recruit has truly made a difference. The team’s understanding and openness has allowed me to be myself, to openly share my experiences, and to participate in the workday without feeling alienated. It can be hard to express yourself but being part of the team at KXR has helped me be comfortable and be myself day in day out.

I have shared my experiences with my colleagues offering them insights into what Ramadan is like from my point of view. It has helped me educate my colleagues on how this month is practiced by many and myself. These conversations have not only allowed me to educate others about the significance of this time but have also built stronger connections with those around me.

The inclusivity I’ve experienced here contributes to a sense of respect for all employees, regardless of their religious or cultural background, which enhances both my working experience and personal growth. This helps me personally, boost my confidence and be myself in and out the workplace. By embracing diverse perspectives, the team has created a supportive space where I feel empowered to be confident in who I am. It’s a wonderful feeling to be part of an organisation where I can embrace my faith fully and share it with my colleagues.

What will change in the coming years?

In the next couple of years, Ramadan will start to fall during the winter period of year. That means for many people who work the traditional hours of a 9-5, they would be most likely be breaking their fast during working hours. This is because the sun tends to set much earlier compared to the other seasons in the year. This can present a challenge for both employees and employers.

Traditionally, Iftar (the meal to break fast) is shared with family, friends, or community members, and it’s important for fasting individuals to break their fast at the prescribed time. Iftar gatherings, which are an important part of the fasting experience, could be adapted to reflect the fact that they will often coincide with the workday. Employers may choose to provide employees with catered Iftar meals or organise virtual or in-person events to break the fast together. This can strengthen community bonds among colleagues, especially in multicultural work environments. Which can help build an inclusive workplace. This can ensure that employees continue to feel valued and supported.

If any employers have any inquiries about flexibility for months like Ramadan, don’t hesitate to give us call to help better your working environment and make it more inclusive. Together, we can build workplaces that celebrate diversity and allow every employee to thrive, regardless of their faith or background.

Eid Mubarak and enjoy the last couple of days of this month!
