Building Skills and Confidence at KX Recruit
Dorine’s Six-Month Journey
At KX Recruit, we believe that when people are supported, trusted, and given the space to grow, incredible progress follows. Dorine’s journey with us over six months is a perfect example of that belief in action, and we couldn’t be prouder of what she has achieved.
About Dorine’s Role
Dorine joined KX Recruit on a six months contract with the support of Camden’s Learning Disability Job Hub Team as a Business Support Assistant, where she became a vital part of the day-to-day running of our office. Her role sat at the heart of the business, supporting both the team and our visitors while helping to keep everything organised and running smoothly.
A typical day for Dorine started at 9am, where she checked reception emails and planned the tasks ahead. From there, her work spanned a wide range of responsibilities, including:
- Managing stock and ensuring food and beverage supplies were up to date
- Checking facilities and keeping shared spaces well maintained
- Answering phone calls from candidates and directing enquiries
- Meeting and greeting visitors, making them feel welcome and comfortable
- Setting up meeting rooms and preparing documents for important meetings
- Supporting the team with research tasks, including work for the Director
- Preparing for events and ensuring marketing materials were current
This variety allowed Dorine to build confidence across multiple skills while playing an essential role in the wider KX Recruit team.
Growing Independence and Confidence
One of Dorine’s proudest achievements was handling the front desk independently, especially when the rest of the team was in meetings. When she first joined KX Recruit, the thought of being left on her own at reception would have felt overwhelming. Six months later, she was confidently managing the front desk independently, reflecting just how far her confidence and communication skills had come in such a short period of time.
Dorine particularly enjoyed answering phone calls and meeting visitors – tasks that highlighted her growing independence and professionalism. While some tasks felt challenging at first, Dorine approached them with determination. When she needed clarity, she confidently asked for step-by-step guidance to ensure she completed tasks to a high standard. This was a strength that demonstrated her commitment to doing things well.
Learning and Development at KX Recruit
Since joining KX Recruit, Dorine made significant progress through structured learning and on-the-job experience. She developed her skills through:
- SkillsBuilder training, which she completed daily
- HR and GDPR training, which built her understanding of workplace and recruitment practices
- An administration course organised through the Camden Disability Team
Through SkillsBuilder alone, Dorine completed eight training modules, covering one module per core skill. Her most improved skills were Listening, Speaking and Problem Solving, all of which contributed directly to her increased confidence and ability to work independently.
Dorine also completed a SkillsBuilder evaluation at the end of every working day, allowing her to track her progress and reflect on her development, which she found both motivating and empowering.
Making a Real Impact
Dorine’s contribution extended beyond her daily tasks. One standout project involved researching new job categories to add to our CRM system and website, helping candidates find the right roles more easily. This work had a direct impact on improving our candidate experience and demonstrated Dorine’s ability to add real value to the business.
Supportive Team, Supportive Culture
Dorine felt fully supported by both her manager, Francesca, and the wider team. This support played a huge role in her success. Different team members supported her growth in different ways:
- Francesca with day-to-day guidance
- Niamh with SkillsBuilder and interview skills
- Lee with CV improvements
- Lara with hosting events
This collaborative environment helped Dorine feel comfortable asking for help, sharing ideas and developing at her own pace.
What Makes KX Recruit Special
For Dorine, working at KX Recruit felt like “a new chapter”. She described the environment as calm, respectful and non-stressful, a feeling very different from other roles she might have taken. Being based in a lovely place such as the King’s Cross Estate and working with a friendly, patient team made a lasting impression.
She felt listened to, valued and respected. These qualities are central to KX Recruit’s culture and something we were deeply proud of.
Looking Ahead
By the end of her placement, Dorine said her confidence compared to when she started was “100% different.”
She planned to carry the skills she had gained at KX Recruit into future roles, continuing to build her independence, professionalism and ability to support others.
Her future goals included:
- Continuing to develop her admin and teamwork skills
- Exploring different career paths
- Supporting other people with self-esteem and confidence by sharing her own experiences
